MST was founded by athlete and fitness specialist Michael Sweeney.

As a former Division 1 college basketball player with over 25 years of fitness experience, Michael Sweeney understands the motivation and stimulation the mind and body need to achieve good health and fitness.  After many years of training in the environs of gyms and health clubs, Michael decided to create his own personal training business.
"After many years of training for corporate gyms, I decided to venture out on my own, and devise a training method that is more compatible with my ideas of what it means to be fit and healthy, without the grueling 'No Pain, No Gain' mentality that has hijacked much of gym and fitness culture," Michael explains. "My approach focuses on educating my clients and guiding them into a healthy relationship with exercise that produces sustainable, life-long results. I tend to steer clients away from the trendy, high-intensity workouts that place current and future health at risk." Sweeney has trained hundreds of people ranging from school athletes to seniors recovering from joint replacement surgery, from middle-aged executives looking to build their strength to morbidly obese clients who decided they needed a drastic life change. He's helped each client successfully reach his or her fitness goals, large and small, with a nurturing approach and an infectious confidence-building, can-do attitude.
Michael's passion in discovering a better way was a direct result of studying the world's 'Blue Zones', a series of books and initiatives backed by National Geographic and based on the habits of the longest-lived cultures on earth. "After studying the 'Blue Zones', I began my quest to combine safe and moderate exercise techniques with nutrition and an outlook on lifestyle and longevity that stems from the knowledge gleaned as to what makes people live long and healthy lives."
Michael's variety of techniques focus on endurance, flexibility, core stabilization, strength and whole food nutrition, and they allow the body to adapt at a pace suitable to each individual. No tricks. No gimmicks. No quick fixes. Just smart and challenging work to stimulate incremental increases in his clients' health and fitness.
Michael is an ACE certified personal trainer who enjoys travel and great food, often shared with his partner Dana. He also enjoys keeping fit himself, spending time outdoors -- especially with his dog Ollie.

MST has its fair share of fans and followers.

With close to two decades of training experience, and hundreds of satisfied clients, Michael's retention rate for those he trains is much higher than your average personal trainer. What does this mean? His clients are satisfied because he gets them results. They stick with him to maintain feeling and looking great. Below are some of the numerous MST client testimonials that attest to the effectiveness of Michael Sweeney Training.

"I trained with Mike for many years. I went from a depressed, 50 pound overweight female couch potato with back issues, to a confident healthy 65-year-old able to hike, run, and lift weights. Mike treats every client as an individual. He not only insures you are working out correctly with innovative techniques but also encourages good nutrition by providing proper diet plans.  I lost 50 pounds while training with Mike and even better, my BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol are all well within a healthy range." -- Terry S.

"Mike is a wonderful trainer. He encouraged and motivated me to work hard every session. He is reliable, skilled and fun to work with. He made every workout different, challenging, and enjoyable and helped me achieve the results I was looking for. Mike introduced me to working outdoors and I now have a favorite spot: the Park! Thanks Mike! You are awesome!" -- Fatima M.

"I have trained with many trainers over the years and at various gyms. Mike is the only trainer that will review my routine and change it to “jolt” my body and keep me from boredom. No other trainer has ever done that for me. Mike not only helps me achieve great results, he is committed in making sure we are eating properly. He goes above and beyond the function of a trainer.  He has gone to the supermarket and shown us what we should be eating for a healthier lifestyle!  In my previous experiences with other trainers, not once have they gone over my eating habits. Not only is he there every Monday at 6am, but he also puts together extra walks/runs at a nearby park. To me this shows his commitment to his profession. One of the advantages I find in having Mike as a trainer is his knowledge of the profession.  If he can’t answer my question, he will research the answer."  -- Nancy E.

"When I began working with Mike in my 60’s, I was despairing of ever taking physical activity seriously.  Every time I began some kind of exercise regimen, with a trainer or on my own, I lost interest and energy for it.  I just don’t have time! was my refrain.  So, when I tried one more time I was not hopeful.  Seven years later, and in my 70's, I still work regularly with Mike, and he estimated I was in the top 1% for strength and conditioning in my age group. Amazing.  And, I could see the difference and feel it.  My husband loved it!  I think what kept me going was Mike’s endless curiosity about training, development, physiology and addressing specific real-life issues of real people.  I was never bored and never injured. Thank you Mike!" -- Claudia M.

"Mike Sweeney provided excellent training and experience. He provides not just exercise but an education in being healthy and fit for the long term. Mike introduced me to kettlebells and I still, after all these years, enjoy working with them. Thanks for everything Mike!" -- JoAnn W.

"I have the great fortune of having Mike Sweeney as a personal trainer. I first met Mike several years ago when I was looking to get in shape for my wedding. Mike was amazing! Instead of just jumping into exercises, he took the time to talk to me about my goals. This helped him shape the type of training we did, and it made me feel like Mike was taking a genuine interest in what I needed. Mike was interested not only in fitness but also nutrition. This maximized the training. I have to say, I had not experienced the nutrition aspect of training in the past. Mike is a fun and engaging trainer who is extremely knowledgeable in many different types of exercises and how they benefit the body. He knows a great deal about nutrition and he trained me in a way that really worked for me." -- Vanessa M.

"When I starting working with Mike, I was recovering from an injury and had concerns about starting to workout again. I also shared with Mike that my body tends to build muscle more quickly than the average woman and that was something I wanted to avoid.  Michael is extremely knowledgeable about a broad spectrum of training methodologies and data, but the quality that I most appreciated about him is his ability to truly listen to your needs and tailor a regimen that integrates both his expertise with his client's concerns, needs and goals. I can't say enough about Mike's talents. And he's simply fun to work with - you'll have a smile on your face the whole workout!" -- Jennifer G.

"Mike Sweeney had been training us for the past three years and we would highly recommend him as a trainer.  He is very knowledgeable in his field and is able to help anyone achieve their goal. He provides motivation and support every step of the way. Any time we had questions, even if they were outside hours of our sessions, he would always provide answers. When we started sessions with him both of us were out of shape.  He made us understand how we can become fit at our own pace, eat healthier and feel better through the whole process. Both of us lost weight and gained the much needed strength. He taught us a new way of living which now helps us do activities that we wouldn't be able to do without the fitness. Through these years we were able to get to know Mike quite well and can vouch that he is a man of integrity, honesty, and is very hard working. He cares about all his clients and their well-being, which is a trait very hard to find in any trainers today. We felt like he was part of our family." -- Nilesh and Chhaya P.

"I first met Mike Sweeney almost a decade ago. I was 47 yrs old, overweight, out of shape, tired, and in bad health. I was on medication for high blood pressure and had just learned I was showing signs of fatty liver disease. I needed to doing something drastic to get myself into shape and I needed to do it soon. What I chose to do was hire Mike Sweeney as my personal trainer. His immense task was to help me regain my faltering health and shed my unwanted weight. I started with Mike during a heat wave when the gym had lost its air-conditioning. I should have quit then but Mike insisted we keep going. I was very overweight yet his motivation, in these dire circumstances, showed me he was not backing down from any challenge. Mike influenced me to try things I wouldn't ordinarily do. Within the first year Mike started me running and made me become more aware of my diet. His best advice which I have taken to heart was red wine with dinner. I lost over 55 lbs which I never imagined would happen. Even more amazing, I have managed to keep the weight off. I am off the high blood pressure medication and no longer show signs of fatty liver. I am a lot stronger, leaner, healthier, and happy. In a way I have to say I owe Mike Sweeney for giving me my life back. It is nice to have people tell me I look fantastic and they can not get over how healthy and fit I look.  The greatest victory of all: I now enjoy working out and can’t wait to see what Mike comes up with next for me. Thanks for your expertise and patience, Mike!" -- Lori H.

"Here is what you need to know about Mike Sweeney: He is a true professional who really gets to know and care about his clients. He really knows his way around human anatomy and has a solid grasp of advanced techniques similar to physical therapy. I have never known him to just go through the motions during a session, or to blow smoke about my progress. There is great patience in his approach, but also honesty. He is very alert to what is happening right now with the client and when new info suggests a given activity may be inappropriate, he has an uncanny ability to deploy a custom solution on the fly. 'OK,' he will say, 'let's scratch these exercises today and do this workout instead.' The most important lesson, which took a long time to sink in, is that paying attention and being patient with my body is way better than trying to power through any potential pain. Because he knew me so well and understood my inclination to want to push myself way too hard without regard to my body he would tell me: 'Don't be too greedy!'  And that phrase stuck in my head, cautioning me to be patient and consistent and the results will come. I miss him greatly and wish him success in New York. My loss is your gain: go with Mike!" -- Nick S.

"Whatever level of fitness you're starting from, it doesn't matter -- Mike is glad you're on board.  He is passionate about health and has an abundance of knowledge to share about fitness and diet. Not only does he keep up with the latest training trends, explaining how and why they're effective, but he will customize a routine that will benefit you and your schedule. I think of Mike as more of a personal "coach" because he really wants you to succeed. He will discuss and adjust your diet if needed, explain what to avoid and why as well as provide many alternatives to try. He even took his clients to the grocery store on his own time to go through the aisles and explain about ingredients to avoid. I can honestly say after working with Mike for a number of years on and off that you will probably never find another trainer/coach with as much genuine compassion for you to be healthy and meet your personal goals." -- Jeanne G.

"I would like everyone to know Mike Sweeney is a superb personal trainer and a very special friend. Over the years before I met Mike I experienced a number of trainers, good and bad. What I've learned is that Mike, in comparison, is a cut above the rest. He trained me using his innovative methods while I recovered from two hip replacement surgeries. He introduced me to a healthy and realistic way of exercising in moderation, while working on my flexibility and helping me walk again. Mike possesses tremendous knowledge about the body, incorporating this gift into the unique programs he designed for me. He is an intuitive trainer who is very sensitive to his clients' needs. After my surgeries, Mike helped me regain my balance, strength, and helped me improve my chronic sciatic pain. To me, he is an invaluable trainer and friend. His care and great humor has enabled me to work through the challenging aspects of recovering from two hip surgeries while increasing my functional abilities. I am very much indebted to Mike." -- Kathy W.

"Mike Sweeney has really helped me focus on training and kick-started my weight loss. I am more excited about my workouts, and I look forward to reaching my health and fitness goals. It is definitely worth it!" -- Casey F.
